KNITTING:  A toy Santa or Father Christmas, and a gnome to knit.

These beautiful Christmas characters are knitted from a very vintage and historically interesting “Bestway” pattern published during WW2. It has references to “salvage” materials and “unavailability” of yarn and the characters are different to those we have now.

The foreground chubby gnome looks more like our current jolly Santa images and is given top billing! The slender chap in the background is actually the “Father Christmas” figure. The pattern was republished later with the 2 characters swapped around; as you can see if you compare my pattern images here.

Of course you can use either body shape for your characters - but this is such an interesting pattern historically I thought you may like to see both versions!
